Window installation cost in the U.S.

Window replacements fall in the range below per opening. Frame material and whether the installer reuses or replaces the trim drive the swing.

Typical national range
$8,000
typical project
Most projects fall between $2,000 and $25,000.

Factors that move the price

  • Frame material
Vinyl: cheapest. Fiberglass: mid. Composite + aluminum-clad wood: high. Solid wood: highest and requires the most maintenance.
  • Glass package
Double-pane with low-E is the modern default. Triple-pane is worth it in extreme climates only. Argon gas fill is a small upgrade with measurable savings.
  • Pocket vs. full-frame
Pocket installs slide into the existing frame — cheap and fast. Full-frame replaces everything down to the studs — better long-term, much more labor.
  • Number of windows
Per-window pricing drops sharply with volume. A whole-house package is much cheaper per opening than three at a time.
  • Trim repair + paint
Old rotted trim is the most common cost-creep. Get the contractor to inspect before quoting and itemize trim work separately.
