Interior painting cost in the U.S.
Interior painting jobs fall in the range below. Single rooms anchor the low end; whole-house repaints with trim and ceilings anchor the high end.
Typical national range
$3,000
typical project
Most projects fall between $1,000 and $8,000.
Industry estimate from public-source pricing data. Local prices vary widely — see your metro area below.
Factors that move the price
- ScopeWalls only is cheapest. Adding ceilings is ~30% more labor; adding trim and doors is another 30-50%. Always specify exactly what's included.
- Prep workPatching, sanding, and priming is half the job on older homes. A cheap quote that 'spot-primes' is going to telegraph every drywall flaw through the finish coat.
- Paint gradeBuilder-grade paint costs less but covers worse and shows wear faster. Mid-grade (Sherwin-Williams ProClassic, Benjamin Moore Regal) is the workhorse.
- CoatsOne coat over a similar color: cheapest. Two coats over a dark or stained surface: standard. Three coats over white-over-red: realistic for stubborn colors.
- Ceiling heightStandard 8-foot ceilings are quick. Two-story foyers and vaulted ceilings need staging, scaffolding, or rolling poles — material is the same, labor doubles.

Common questions
- Do painters move my furniture?
- Usually yes — to the middle of the room and under drop cloths. Heavy or fragile items (pianos, art) are normally on you, but ask up front.
