Plumbing cost in the U.S.
Most plumbing service calls fall in the range below. Diagnosis and clearing a drain are the smallest jobs; re-pipes and water-heater swaps anchor the high end.
Typical national range
$500
typical project
Most projects fall between $150 and $2,500.

Factors that move the price
- Service fee vs. project priceMost plumbers charge a flat trip fee that gets credited against the job. For small fixes, the fee is the bulk of the bill.
- Material in the wallsCopper, PEX, galvanized, and cast iron all behave differently. Old galvanized supply lines are often the source of slow leaks and low pressure — expensive to fix one section at a time.
- Permit + inspectionAnything past the meter or main shut-off usually needs a permit. The fee itself is small; the timeline impact is the bigger cost.
- Water heater typeStandard tank: cheapest. Tankless: 1.5-2× install cost but much lower operating cost. Hybrid heat-pump: highest install, lowest operating.

Common questions
- Is a tankless water heater worth it?
- Yes if you'd otherwise replace a tank within the next 5 years and your gas line is sized for it. The payback runs 6-12 years on utility savings; the unit itself lasts 20+.
